Fall 2021 Paddling Program Guide


Note that FGPC currently maintains COVID mitigation programs linked to public health orders and guidance from our sport sector.

Importantly, all paddlers participating in group programming will be required to present their Provincial Vaccine Passport at their first paddling session. Please do not present your passport before your first session.

By means of effective onsite controls for illness prevention in conjunction with vaccination compliance, FGPC is confident that our programs can continue to operate for everyone’s benefit over the fall and winter months to come.

FGPC Outrigger OC1 Programs

For the Fall of 2021, FGPC offers Recreational and Performance level OC1 programming. All programs require enrollment in our OC1 Paddling Access Membership.


Solo Recreational OC1 weekday series

This program is available to FGPC EAP paddlers who have graduated from the beginner series or who have self This program is available to FGPC paddlers who have graduated from the beginner series or who have self rescue records on file with FGPC. A maximum of 6 seats per day are available for this program from October through December (11 practices) from 11:00am to 12:30pm. These sessions are accompanied by FGPC coaches for safety and instruction; paddlers will learn new techniques as well as have opportunities to improve their existing skills in a safe but fun and social environment.

    • October 4 to December 16, 2021 (13 sessions)

“Recreational” Dry Land Training

This coached 12-week strength program supplements the Recreational OC1 programs. This option is ideal for those who have learned the basics of strength and conditioning in the gym and are ready to move toward intermediate lifts, while refining sport-specific exercises. As with all WF and FGPC programs, there will be a careful eye on technique in order to continue building strength without compromising range of motion, translating to overall performance improvements on the water.


 

“Solo Performance” 1X WEEKLY series

The Performance OC1 training series places experienced paddlers in 1x weekly advanced coached sessions designed to challenge the abilities and develop the potential of each participant.

  • Sundays (weekly) 11:00am – 12:30pm
    • October 3 – December 12 (11 sessions)
    • Limited to 20 participants (8 club + 12 private boats)
    • Coaches: Marcus Krieger, Miles Krakowec-Tickner

“Performance” Dry Land Training

This coached 12-week strength program supplements the Intermediate/Performance OC1 programs. This option is ideal for those who are experienced with strength and conditioning in the gym, with sessions having increased training volume, focused on both compound lifts and sport-specific exercises. As with all WF and FGPC programs, there will be a careful eye on technique in order to continue building strength without compromising range of motion, translating to overall performance improvements on the water.


FGPC Team Boat Outrigger Programs


FGPC team boat programs will continue through the fall/winter season under a revised program and coaching model. FGPC programs have moved away from the previous “cohort” model, and will resume a back-to-normal program guide, similar to pre-COVID seasons. Note that FGPC currently maintains COVID mitigation programs linked to public health orders and guidance from our sport sector. In addition, all staff & coaches as well as participants will be expected to register their COV-2 vaccination status with FGPC by means of BC’s vaccination “passport” system when it becomes available. By means of effective onsite controls for illness prevention in conjunction with vaccination compliance, FGPC is confident that our programs can continue to operate for everyone’s benefit over the fall and winter months to come.

Paddler participation in programs will now follow a new commitment-based model, with a minimum weekly workout recommendation for entry into programs.

All team programs are $150.00 for three months of paddling, with weekly training plans and input from FGPC coaches.


Daytime Recreational Outrigger Series

Intermediate Performance Outrigger Series

For paddlers who want to train and compete in outrigger races, but are unable to commit to the full requirements of the Performance program. The program’s focus will be on competing in races across Vancouver Island throughout the spring, summer and fall. Intermediate OC sessions run on Tuesdays from 7:00pm – 8:30pm and Saturday mornings from 9:00am – 11:00am.

Performance Outrigger for Dragon Boaters Series

This is the off-season program for the committed dragon boat paddler. This program will paddle in outrigger canoes over the winter months, building training habits, technique and fitness that paddlers can bring back to their dragon boat teams in the spring.

Performance Outrigger Racing Series

For the serious racer, this is FGPC’s podium-focussed performance training series. Paddlers will train twice a week in crews, with one weekend practice and one weekday evening session. The performance program attends many races throughout the province and the Pacific Northwest, and typically attends one or two major international races per year. Participants are expected to train a minimum of two times per week with the crew, as well as additional independent OC1 and gym training. Dry Land Training

“Introductory/Novice” Dry Land Training

This coached 12-week strength program supplements the Novice OC1 programs. This option is ideal for those who are new to the gym, with the athlete learning the foundations of strength and conditioning, as well as sport-specific exercises. There will also be a careful eye on technique in order to build optimal movement patterns that will translate to overall performance improvements on the water.
