Spring/Summer 2022 Paddling Program Guide


FGPC Festival Fast-Track Programs

Here’s a Fast-Track to FUN!

Hop into FGPC’s Festival Fast-Track program for a three-session crash-course in dragon boat paddling and complimentary entry into the Vancouver Island Dragon Boat Festival (Victoria Aug. 6-7), a weekend of fun, food, prizes, entertainment and racing!

We’re offering two streams, beginner and corporate, for this new program.

Beginner:

FGPC’s Beginner Festival Fast-Track sessions are Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., July 16th, July 23rd and July 30th, with racing on Aug. 6 – 7.

FGPC has gladly sponsored reduced admission fees for this unique opportunity: 

  • Ages 12 – 18: $50
  • Ages 18+: $85
  • Household pricing: $150 for two adults plus $30 for each 12-18-year-old in the same household

Corporate:

FGPC’s Corporate Festival Fast-Track sessions are Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., July 14th, 21st and 28th, with racing on Aug. 6 – 7.

Note that FGPC currently maintains COVID mitigation programs linked to public health orders and guidance from our sport sector.

Importantly, all paddlers participating in group programming will be required to present their Provincial Vaccine Passport at their first paddling session. Please do not present your passport before your first session.

By means of effective onsite controls for illness prevention in conjunction with vaccination compliance, FGPC is confident that our programs can continue to operate for everyone’s benefit over the spring and summer months to come.

FGPC Outrigger OC1 Programs

For the Spring and Summer of 2022, FGPC offers Beginner, Recreational and Performance level OC1 programming. Recreational and Performance programs require enrollment in our OC1 Paddling Access Membership. Once Beginners “graduate” to recreational level, they will need to enroll in our OC1 Paddling Access Membership to continue paddling.


Beginner OC1 1x Weekend Series (4 sessions)

These classes provide coached sessions for paddlers who are new to OC1 (outrigger “solo” canoe) paddling. Participants will learn paddling and safety techniques, and how to manoeuver and steer as well as dock and launch. They will also learn the navigation rules of the Gorge waterway. Each participant will graduate with the self-rescue skills required to use FGPC’s fleet of solo boats. Paddlers who graduate from solo beginner classes can progress to other FGPC OC1 classes over the spring, summer, fall and winter seasons.

“Introductory and Recreational” Dry Land Training

These coached 10-week strength programs supplement the Introductory programs. This option is ideal for those who are experienced with strength and conditioning in the gym, with sessions having increased training volume, focused on both compound lifts and sport-specific exercises. As with all WF and FGPC programs, there will be a careful eye on technique in order to continue building strength without compromising range of motion, translating to overall performance improvements on the water.


Solo Recreational OC1 weekday series

The Recreational OC1 series is available to FGPC paddlers who have graduated from the beginner series or who The Recreational OC1 series is available to FGPC paddlers who have graduated from the beginner series or who have self rescue records on file with FGPC. A maximum of 6 spots are available for this program from April through June, and July through September (13 practices each) from 11:00am to 12:30pm. This weekly session is accompanied by an FGPC coach for safety and instruction; paddlers will learn new techniques as well as have opportunities to improve their existing skills in a safe but fun and social environment.

“Solo Performance” 1X WEEKLY series

The Performance OC1 training series places experienced paddlers in a weekly advanced session designed to challenge the abilities and develop the potential of each participant. Practices are weekly on Sundays from 11:00am – 12:30pm from April through June, and July through September (13 sessions each). All performance candidates will fill out a form prior to receiving a registration link from FGPC’s head coach.

“Performance” Dry Land Training

This option is ideal for those who are experienced with strength and conditioning in the gym, with sessions having increased training volume, focused on both compound lifts and sport-specific exercises. As with all WF and FGPC programs, there will be a careful eye on technique in order to continue building strength without compromising range of motion, translating to overall performance improvements on the water.


FGPC Team Boat Outrigger Programs


Note that FGPC currently maintains COVID mitigation programs linked to public health orders and guidance from our sport sector. In addition, all staff & coaches as well as participants will be expected to register their COV-2 vaccination status with FGPC by means of BC’s vaccination “passport” system when it becomes available. By means of effective onsite controls for illness prevention in conjunction with vaccination compliance, FGPC is confident that our programs can continue to operate for everyone’s benefit over the fall and winter months to come.

Paddler participation in programs will now follow a new commitment-based model, with a minimum weekly workout recommendation for entry into programs.

Team programs fees are shown below (1x per week options available upon request), with weekly training plans and input from FGPC coaches.


Daytime Recreational Outrigger Series

Intermediate Outrigger Series

The Intermediate Outrigger program is for paddlers who want to train and compete in local outrigger races, while building stronger paddling technique and fitness. This program now consists of the combined Intermediate and OCDB (Outrigger Canoe for Dragon Boaters) programs, and anyone with a competitive drive is welcomed. The program’s focus will be on competing in races across Vancouver Island throughout the spring, summer and fall. Intermediate OC sessions run on Tuesdays from 6:00pm – 7:30pm and Saturday mornings from 11:00am – 1:00pm.

“Intermediate” Dry Land Training

These coached 10-week strength programs supplement the Intermediate programs. This option is ideal for those who are experienced with strength and conditioning in the gym, with sessions having increased training volume, focused on both compound lifts and sport-specific exercises. As with all WF and FGPC programs, there will be a careful eye on technique in order to continue building strength without compromising range of motion, translating to overall performance improvements on the water.


Performance Outrigger Racing Series

For the serious racer, this is FGPC’s podium-focused performance training series. Paddlers will train three times a week in crews, with one weekend practice and two weekday evening sessions. The performance program attends many races throughout the province and the Pacific Northwest, and typically attends a major international race each year. Participants are expected to train a minimum of three times per week with the crew, as well as additional independent OC1 and gym training. All performance candidates will fill out a form prior to receiving a registration link from FGPC’s head coach.

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:30pm – 7:00pm, Sundays 8:30am – 11:00am
    • April – September
    • Limited to 36 registrations
    • $70.00 monthly, on a recurring contract

Dragon Boat Programs

FGPC Summer Dragon Boat Program

Starting this April, we are excited to announce our new and improved summer dragon boat training program! This program is for paddlers of any skill, fitness or experience level. From current training dragon boaters, to paddlers who are just starting their paddling journeys, this program will teach dragon boat stroke techniques, while building fitness to prepare participants for a summer of racing.

This is the perfect place to start training in dragon boats! If you are new to the sport and are looking to learn more before you join a team, this program will give you a crash course in dragon boating in a safe and fun environment.
